One Year Old Portraits of William

One Year Old Portrait | http://jbsmithblog.com

How adorable is one year old William?! This little guy brought his parents to the studio recently for a portrait session. He was just on the cusp of walking and was pretty darn proud of himself when he got himself standing up. You may recognise William’s parents as I photographed their wedding in 2011 at the always awesome Art Gallery of Ontario. It is always fun to photograph past wedding client’s again as they continue on their journey together. One Year Old Portrait | http://jbsmithblog.comOne Year Old Portrait | http://jbsmithblog.comOne Year Old Portrait | http://jbsmithblog.com

Editorial & Headshot Portraits

Editorial Portrait | Jessica Blaine Smith
I do not post about this type of work often but, besides photographing weddings and your adorable families, I also do a lot of editorial and headshot portraits. Sometimes this work is not the most exciting aesthetically to show off here on my blog but sometimes, it’s pretty fun. When photographing editorial work, I often have to wait patiently for months before seeing the final portrait in print format. It’s always fun to see how my images end up. I recently photographed an entertainment lawyer at the Thompson Hotel. I had about forty-five minutes to photograph her in the lobby and rooftop. It was a good challenge for me and we ended up with a bunch of different options for the final images. The above portrait was then used in a magazine ad. Another recent editorial portrait session that I did was with Ryerson University Magazine. I am a graduate of Ryerson so it’s a lot of fun to now work for them. The portrait was photographed at my studio. We were going for a fresh shot to showcase what the subject does in her profession. I just love the end result.Editorial Portrait | Jessica Blaine Smith

In the past few months I have also done a number of small headshot portrait sessions. Sometimes they are pretty standard; photographed straight-up with a white backdrop. Other times, I am given more creative free range like you see in the image below of the CMO of Tangerine. I think that in this wild digital age of social media, more people are starting to learn how important it is to have a professional portrait done. That selfie done on your iPhone just does not suffice anymore if you are trying to stand out from everyone else. Editorial Portrait | Jessica Blaine SmithHeadshot Portrait | Jessica Blaine Smith

My Photos in Miranda Esmonde-White’s Aging Backwards

Aging Backwards | Jessica Blaine Smith

As a portrait photographer, you get to photograph some pretty cool stuff. And sometimes you have to be pretty patient in waiting until you can share said cool stuff! If you have heard me talk anything health-related, you know that I am totally obsessed with Essentrics. I have had a couple of their DVDs for years and then last year, I was lucky enough to attend a couple of their classes with Sahra Esmonde-White in Toronto. Last September I was in Montreal and met up with Sahra for brunch. At the end of it, she asked if I would be interested in doing some photos for an upcoming book that her mother, Miranda, was writing. A month later, the Essentrics team was at my studio for two days of fitness photo-taking! We shot over four hundred poses with three models and it was a lot of fun. Fast forward a year and the book – Aging Backwards – is finally available on book shelves! I began reading it two days ago and cannot put it down. And I must say that it is pretty darn cool to see my images in it.Aging Backwards | Jessica Blaine SmithAging Backwards | Jessica Blaine SmithAging Backwards | Jessica Blaine SmithAging Backwards | Jessica Blaine SmithAging Backwards | Jessica Blaine SmithAging Backwards | Jessica Blaine Smith

Real Life Family Portraits at the Studio, Toronto

Studio Family Portrait | http://jbsmithphotography.comI love photographing families as they are. Forget the perfectly-posed, hands-in-lap, teeth-smile, combed-hair portraits. I love the real ones that show the true expressions and personality of each family member. I love any “imperfections” that come from these portraits because they often give more insight into who that person is. It is incredible to have these images to look back on when the kids are adults. (I recently wrote about the value of images on my personal blog here.)

I especially love them when families come into the studio every year for new portraits to document the changes and growth in their family. In 2006 I photographed Heather and Strahan’s wedding and since then I have been photographing them annually as each of their three kids was born. This year’s session was taken the morning after Halloween so the kids had a little extra sugar pulsing through their veins! I also love that Heather’s parents joined in for a few portraits. Having photos with the grandparents is such a wonderful thing.

One Year Old Ezekiel at the Studio, Toronto

One Year Old | Jessica Blaine Smith http://jbsmithphotography.comSo, there may be too many images in this blog post but I couldn’t help it: Ezekiel is TOO CUTE. Him and his parents recently came into the studio on his birthday to celebrate turning the big one year old! You may remember the last time that he was at the studio for portraits when he was two months old. This little guy just keeps getting cuter and more smiley and it is such a joy to experience.

P.S. You may have seen my announcement yesterday for my Holiday Portrait Party on Saturday, November 29th! The day is already halfway filled up so if you are interested in snagging a session, please contact me soon!
