Family Portraits: Caroline & Vav’s Growing Family

Growing Family | Jessica Blaine SmithMy Growing Families blog posts are definitely one of my most favourite things right now. I spent the bulk of yesterday going through my archives pulling images of families that I have photographed a number of times over the years. What a journey my camera and I have been on! It’s an honour to document so many people at all of the big moments in their lives.

When you have been photographing a family like Caroline and Vav’s for six years, you really get to know them. Back in June 2008 I had the pleasure of photographing their wedding at the Estates of Sunnybrook’s Mclean House. I remember so much about that day. I remember that they served eggs benedict for dinner and that their pomeranian, Stella, was part of the ceremony. During cocktails she toured around to the groups of people mingling on the lawn just like a human guest. At their wedding they announced the sex of the baby that Caroline was pregnant with and I can still hear the yells of excitement from that moment. Alex was born in November of that year and in 2011 Zach made his appearance. The two are growing into handsome little men, each with their own big personalities and it has been such a joy to watch (and capture!). I am looking forward to our next session together which may or may not include an extra member of the family. Stay tuned!

Sarah & Waub’s Wedding at Camp Wakonda, Ontario

Camp Wakonda Wedding | Jessica Blaine SmithSarah and Waub are married! I have known Waub since my Ryerson University days. When he met Sarah, I just knew that something was different with my awesome friend. When I finally met her for their engagement session in the fall, my heart told me that they are a perfect fit. Their wedding took place at Camp Wakonda which is located north of Echo Bay on McCarroll Lake outside of Sault Ste. Marie. Their wedding was a truly family affair. The amount of help that they had from their friends and family was incredible. I could go on and on about all of the awesome people that contributed to the day but I am going to let the images speak for themselves. The short of it is: these two are truly loved. Sarah wore her Mom’s wedding dress that had been redesigned by a family friend. How special is that?! Waub’s step-Mom Deina appliquéd Waub’s vest and made the beaded boutonnieres for the groomsmen. They stayed true to their Ojibway heritage by having a smudging before their ceremony and after it, they had a traditional pow wow style round dance for all of the couples. Sarah and Waub, you two are awesome and it was an honour to be the one to photograph such an special day.

Portraits of Lisa of This Beautiful Day in Los Angeles, California

This Beautiful Day | Jessica Blaine Smith

It seems as though it’s impossible for me to go on a trip – even when it’s purely for vacation – and not do a shoot! A couple of weeks ago we headed to California to attend a wedding in San Francisco. We made a stop in Los Angeles for a few days before the wedding to spend some time with our friends Lisa and Paul. Lisa runs the awesome blog This Beautiful Day. Since moving to California, she had not done new profile photos so I suggested that we do some while I was in town. She needed some portraits of her in that beautiful California light to really showcase where she is at. We wandered the canals of Venice and I love the portraits that came out of it.This Beautiful Day | Jessica Blaine SmithThis Beautiful Day | Jessica Blaine Smith

Author Portraits at my Studio, Toronto

Author Portrait | Jessica Blaine Smith

I am often asked about what kind of photography I do and my reply is usually: “anything with people”. While I photograph a lot of kids, babies, families and weddings, I also photograph a lot of other  people for other purposes whether is be corporate headshots of an entire firm or a single portrait that someone needs for their own marketing needs. It is always fun to see where these images end up and to see what photo the client choses to represent themselves to the world.

There are two books currently on the shelves that have my author portraits in them. The first is in a cook book called How to Feed a Family by Ceri Marsh and Laura Keogh of Sweet Potato Chronicles. It was a lot of fun to photograph these two ladies together at the studio. The second book that has my photo is Elizabeth Renzetti’s Based on a True Story. I photographed Liz in the winter and she told me all about this novel at the shoot. Ever since then, I have been dying to read it but had to patiently wait for it to come out. I love books – real, physical, paper books. I love the feel of them in my hands. I often download books to read on my iPad but they take me twice as long to read. There is nothing like the real thing.Author Portrait | Jessica Blaine SmithAuthor Portrait | Jessica Blaine Smith

One Year Old Portraits of Logan at the Studio, Toronto

One Year Old Portrait

One year old Logan has got to be one of the happiest kids out there!  I love his big smile and he seemed very excited for his portrait session that recently took place at my studio. For this session, we started with some family portraits before finishing up with a good ol’ messy cake smash! Logan was definitely not shy about diving into that gorgeous cake that his Aunt had made for the occasion. On the day of this session, Logan was on the cusp of walking. He could just manage to get himself upright and was so very proud of himself for doing so, as shown in the above image. I love it!One Year Old PortraitOne Year Old PortraitOne Year Old PortraitOne Year Old PortraitOne Year Old PortraitOne Year Old PortraitOne Year Old Portrait
